On May 5, 270 patrons attended the Young Concert Artists Gala Benefit Evening at Alice Tully Hall, which raised $400,000 to support Young Concert Artists’ work to discover and launch the careers of extraordinary young classical musicians.
The evening included Cocktails followed by a concert presenting three YCA soloists with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s conducted by Gerard Schwarz. All three were rewarded with cheering, standing ovations.
Pianist Ji, 24, performed the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23; violinist Benjamin Beilman, 25, performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and pianist George Li, 19, ended the concert with the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. The Gala Concert was followed by a festive dinner.
Among the Benefit guests were Susan Baker, Judy and Anthony Evnin, Fred Frank and Mary Tanner (guests of honor), A.E. Hotchner and Virginia Kiser, the Ambassador of Hungary, Sahra T. Lese, Memrie Lewis, Ellen and James Marcus, Dara Perlbinder, Judy and Herbert Schlosser, Gerard and Jody Schwarz, Robert Sculthrope and Linda Chen, Paul Sekhri (Gala Chairman) and Mark Gude, Annaliese Soros, Daisy Soros, Svetlana and Herbert Wachtell, Susan Wadsworth (Founder and Director of YCA), Charles Wadsworth (Founder and former Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center), and Dr. James and Elizabeth Watson.
The elite roster of YCA artists is selected through the annual Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Each winner is awarded management services and career development, concert engagements throughout the U.S., and debuts in New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. Through the Annaliese Soros Educational Residency Program, YCA artists also perform for and interact with thousands of students nationwide. Among YCA’s 250 “Alumni” are such celebrated musicians as soprano Dawn Upshaw, pianists Emanuel Ax, Murray Perahia and Jeremy Denk, and violinists Ani Kavafian and Pinchas Zukerman.
